Wii Or Kinect: Which Is Better?

Nintendo was the first console maker to bring motion controls to gamers with the Wii. The idea is simple: players wave an IR-equipped controller to act out movements in the game. This feature is included into every game released on the Wii.

Pros:
+ Motion control comes standard with console
+ Large selection of games
+ Plenty of exclusives

Cons:
- Confusing button layout
- Very few Mature-rated games
- No HD graphics

Kinect for Xbox 360

Kinect is essentially an add on controller that gamers can buy for the Xbox 360. It’s basically a camera that tracks you’re movements to control in-game characters and/or objects Wii Controller . It also allows Xbox owners to control their consoles using either hand gestures (Minority Report-style) or with voice commands thanks to the embedded microphone array.

Pros:
+ Most advanced motion controller system available
+ Tons of exclusive titles available
+ Can be used for multiple forms of entertainment

Cons:
- Expensive (for an add-on)
- Limited number of games available now
- Requires 6-8 Ft of space to use properly

So, which one is better? It depends on what you’re looking for and which games you want to play. The Wii is a good choice for Nintendo fans and anyone who doesn’t gawk at complicated button layouts. The Kinect is great for those who want serious, mature, HD games in which they can get fully immersed.

When it comes to technology alone, the Kinect wins by a significant margin. It may be expensive as an add-on, but the motion controller is worth every penny due to the number of other functions it provides. And if you don’t already have an Xbox you can get the full bundle for around $300, which isn’t that much for a console these days.

What’s Better - PlayStation 3 Or a Nintendo new wii controller?

Like the Xbox, the PS3 and the Wii bear little resemblance to the toylike game consoles of the 1980s and 1990s. They are powerful computers that have been optimized for graphics and sound. And, like the Xbox, the two new contenders can handle multimedia and can connect to the Internet.

These two new game machines couldn’t be more different. The PlayStation 3 is a bulky, shiny black box that costs between £300, and £400 retail (wholesale £250-£300) for the more expensive 80GB version. The PS3 includes a hard disk, a networking port, Wi-Fi wireless networking, and playback of DVDs and CDs. It produces high-definition video. In fact, the PS3 can also play a next-generation, high-definition movie disk, called Blu-ray.

The Wii is a small, thin white box that costs just £190 retail (wholesale £150) and has much wimpier specs than the Sony. It does have Wi-Fi, but it lacks a hard disk, a networking port, and the ability to play DVDs or CDs, let alone Blu-ray disks. It cannot produce high-definition video. It has fewer ports and connectors.

Yet, the modest Wii seems to be the more exciting, fun and satisfying of the two machines with but the PS3 has more rich, realistic graphics and intricate game play in some of the half-dozen PS3 games I have tried.

But the Wii wins hearts for one reason: It uses a wireless controller that can detect your arm and hand motions and transfer them to the screen, so that you can physically control the action. This opens up huge possibilities. In sports games, you can actually swing a baseball bat or tennis racket or golf club. In adventure games, you can slash a sword through the air or throw a punch. You make pretty much the same motions, using your full arm and hand, that you’d make with the real objects.

With the Wii, you don’t sit on the couch and just press buttons. You typically stand. You get a workout. In fact the Wii controller, a slim rectangular gadget that looks like a TV remote control, has a wrist strap to prevent it from being hurled across the room while you are, say, serving in tennis. The controller also has a small built-in speaker and it transmits vibrations to make the play more realistic.

To show off these capabilities, every Wii comes with a free disk called Wii Sports that includes simple, basic sports games - tennis, baseball, golf, bowling, and boxing. These aren’t fully realized games; they are more like demonstrations. The graphics are crude and the games lack multiple levels of difficulty. But they are terrific fun.

We assume some clever game developer can produce more sophisticated versions of these sports games, and of other types of games that make full use of the Wii controller. There are also likely to be specialized controllers that can take advantage of the Wii’s motion sensitivity.

The PS3’s video game controller, which resembles the one on the previous-generation PlayStation 2, also has some motion sensitivity. But it seems much more limited, and the controller doesn’t vibrate.

Which Motion Control Is Right For You - The Xbox 360 Kinect Or The Wii?

If you’re wondering about whether or not the Kinect is worth ditching your Wii for, or if you’ve avoided the whole motion control fad but are interested now, read on for a sensible, straight-talking summary on what the Kinect can offer… and what it can’t.

Unlike the Wii, the Xbox 360 Kinect is more than just motion sensing for a new wii controller. Primarily it functions as a full body motion sensor, bringing your torso and every limb into play as potential interface tools.

Accordingly, this requires a great deal more physical effort from a player than the Wii requires. This can be seen as either a disadvantage - too much work for too little gain, or a benefit - an innovative way of turning gaming into exercise.

This motion sensor peripheral also has other tangential features not readily available to the competition. A microphone capable of voice recognition, facial recognition technology, and a camera all round out the peripheral into something that’s truly more than ‘just’ a motion sensor.

It helps that all these components work together to create a coherent and seamless online gaming experience. However, for those who just want a simple, single player ‘plug and play’ environment, it’s likely to be overkill.

Those interested in local multiplayer parties will be glad to know that you do NOT have to buy a new Kinect for every person! Rather, each peripheral can track half a dozen users, although more advanced features are only available to two users at a given time.

Of course, with either system you’ll want multiple controllers for multiple people, so overall it’s a bit of a wash… except for the Kinect being a separate purchase from the console itself!

All this power does come at a price, however. Unlike the wireless motion control of the Wii, the Xbox’s equivalent requires a special cord and port at a minimum.

Wii Motion Plus - Nintendo’s New Game Controller video game controller

The Wii Motion Plus was released in June 2009 after much fanfare at the previous year’s E3. The new Wii Controller addon is basically a plastic piece and a rubber sleeve to cover the additional length to the remote. It easily hooks on to the remote using two small prongs. Of course there is still the plastic cover up at the base of the device so you can still hook in the nunchuk controller.

One of the biggest things you will notice right off is that the controller feels a bit clunky with the Motion Plus attachment. Playing a game horizontally will be a big problem. So here is hoping that there are no games released that make that a requirement. A negative to the controller is that it will no longer fit into the original rechargeable docking station. So you may have to upgrade in the future.

With that said many reviewers have remarked that the Motion Plus has greatly increased the on screen movements to the player’s actual movements. Games like Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10, Grand Slam Tennis, Wii Sports Resorts, and a few other titles are the only games that currently are able to use the new controller. But at a price of around $20.00 there really is no reason not to purchase the attachment. Especially considering that newer game releases will be using it.

In conclusion, the Motion Plus will rely on game developers to put it to use in the games. Hopefully future releases will include this new improved controller but at the same time not make it a necessity to playing games.

The Wii, Motion Technology and Gaming

Before the Wii Controller, no console had developed the technology to take advantage of motion sensors to monitor our movements. The Wii signalled the start of a new type of gaming where your actions could be imitated on the television screen right in front of you. They used this type of technology to develop many simple games such as Wii Sports, which has many short activities such as tennis and bowling. Since then, Nintendo have introduced many more games that require you to use the remote in completely different ways compared to a standard controller.

The main difference new wii controller with the Wii is that it can require you to be much more active. With standard controllers, you can sit down and not move for several hours whilst gaming. With the Wii, some people prefer standing up as this gives them the room to perform a particular movement. This type of motion technology has attracted different types of people with the elderly being reported as enjoying a bit of Wii action in retirement homes.

This level of popularity has not gone unnoticed, which is evident with Xbox and PS3 releasing their own versions of motion technology. Xbox released their Kinect sensor in November 2010, where no controller was used in conjunction with the system and their main motto was ‘you are the controller’. The Kinect sensor is able to pick up your body movements without the need for a controller and it also incorporated hand movements to scroll through menus. This is very impressive technology and is a sign of the future.

PlayStation followed suit by releasing the PlayStation Move controller in September 2010. This is similar to the Wii remote as you have to use the controller to monitor your body movements. It received impressive reviews with many praising its accuracy and how it has been used to develop motion-based gameplay.

Wow, The Nintendo Wii Can Play the Entire Nintendo GameCube Library

The GameCube library offers plenty of great Mario Titles to choose from. From Mario Party 4 through 7, you even have Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros, and the list goes on. Many of the best role playing games, like Zelda are also at your disposal. The Zelda’s Collectors edition enables you to play NES and SNES Zelda titles on the GameCube, and you can even buy the latest Zelda game Twilight Princess for a fraction of the price as the Wii Version. The older games don’t have the motion sensor technology like the Wii games, but who really cares.

The GameCube games play on the Wii console like any other game. The only additional items you video game controller need are a GameCube controller or Memory Cards should you need them. On the top of the Wii Console, there are two doors, which flip up. One of the doors has four controller ports for up to four GameCube controllers. The other door has two slots for memory cards. One downside is with many GameCube controllers are wired, but you can get your sell a wireless wavebird controller for around twenty dollars.
